EXCLUSIVE: “Emperor” star Tommy Lee Jones “learned more than [he] knew before about Japan.”

Tommy Lee Jones has visited Japan many times, since he loves Japan and  has also been doing Japanese canned coffee TV ads for over 6 years.  He’s familiar with present time Japan, but what did he learn about Japan 65 years ago through playing General Douglas MacArthur in “Emperor”?

“In reading about MacArthur in preparation for this role, I learned more than I knew before about the weeks and months immediately following the surrender, and the wisdom of MacArthur in bringing peace to Japan, as opposed to the vengeance that some elected officials in the United States were trying for. That tension was something I really wasn’t adequately aware of until I began to read.”
