Sharon Stone gives her perspective on wedding vows

Sharon Stone played the mother of famous porn star Linda Lovelace in Lovelace. Her character taught her daughter to “obey your husband.” That sounds kind of familiar to me being from Japan where that custom still exists. What does Sharon herself, a two-time divorcée, think about that view?

“Well, first of all, I’d like to acknowledge that culturally, these things shift in cultural realities. And I know that you’re having big dynamic changes in Japan in this cultural reality at the moment. And we, as a culture, have had this shift through this revolution, and a lot of people are taking, and have taken, this out of the wedding vows. To love, honor, and obey has been actually taken out of our wedding vows predominantly. So, I think that many people find that this construct of obeying their wedding partner is something that they choose to remove from the wedding vow and is often taken out now, culturally in the American vow, overall. But in that period, it was still in the wedding vow principally.”
